If you have multiple Keycards or haven't used one in a while, you may want to confirm which seed it stores or check that a specific address belongs to it. Shell gives you three ways to do this.
By default, your Keycard's name is the fingerprint of its seed. Shell displays it on the first line of the main menu.
If you noted the fingerprint during setup, compare it with what Shell shows. A match confirms the card holds the seed you expect.
If you renamed your Keycard, the fingerprint is no longer visible on the main screen. Use one of the methods below instead.
For a definitive check, you can enter your recovery phrase and Shell will confirm whether it matches the seed stored on the card.
1
Insert your Keycard and enter your PIN.
2
Go to Settings > Keycard > Verify Mnemonic.
3
Enter your recovery phrase using one of these methods:
Type each word using ▲ / ▼ Up / Down and ◀ / ▶ Left / Right. Press and hold OK to confirm each word. This works with 12-word, 24-word, and SLIP39 recovery phrases.
Select Scan QR to scan a SeedQR code with Shell's camera.
4
Shell confirms whether the recovery phrase matches the seed on the card.
To verify that a specific address belongs to your Keycard, you can browse all derived addresses directly on Shell's trusted screen and compare with what your software wallet displays.
1
Insert your Keycard and enter your PIN.
2
Go to Addresses > Bitcoin or Addresses > Ethereum.
3
Use ◀ / ▶ Left / Right to move through addresses one index at a time.
4
To jump to a specific index, press the orange key, type the index number, and confirm.
Compare the address shown on Shell with the one in your software wallet. If they match, the address belongs to this Keycard.
Always verify receive addresses on Shell's screen before sharing them. This protects against malware on your computer that could swap addresses. For more on viewing addresses, see Receive crypto.
